Why do brands/businesses offer loyalty programs?
Everyone uses loyalty programs offered by brands/retails these days one way or another. Whether the program is offered by your favorite clothing brand, e-commerce platform like Amazon, or even your favorite coffee shop around the corner, you use these programs because they offer you loyalty incentives like free items/delivery, discounts, or exclusive-access to merchandise so that you come back to their businesses and purchase their products or use their services. Or if you are not a first time buyer yet, they offer these perks to attract your business and encourage you to become their loyal customer.
In short, loyalty programs are a marketing tool for businesses to attract and retain customers by offering people attractive rewards for store/brand loyalty. And as a customer, you are inclined to bring you business to brands/stores that offer more bang for the ๐ธ.
Problems with current loyalty systems
Because deploying a loyalty program can help a business attract and retain customers and essentially increase revenues, business of all sizes introduced or consider introducing its own loyalty program. However, there are number of problems with traditional systems for businesses and consumers:
โ Cost of running a loyalty program is steadily increasing for businesses. Marketing budget to loyalty management and CRM has increased from 23% to 28% from 2021โ2022 (Statista).
โ With too many players and a few giants dominating the market, getting customers to use your program is difficult. These giants have created self-sufficient, closed-ecosystems that offer a wide array of products and services so much so that smaller brands and merchants cannot compete in terms of providing appealing offerings to their customers. As a result, customers are enrolled in more programs but they are not actively using them. Loyalty enrollment and activity from 2014 to 2022 show customer enrollment has increased from 10.9 to 16.6 programs per customer while active memberships are down from 72% to 46% (Bond Brand Loyalty Reports)
โ As a consumer, points earned from engaging in a loyalty program often end up not providing tangible benefits. Here are some examples to illustrate:
๐ When John(๐ฑโโ๏ธ) collects points in a loyalty program by company A, these points are usually not transferable to other programs from company B or C nor can these points be transferred to other people within the same program. And when points are transferable, they are usually restricted by limited partnerships and affiliated relationships with poorly designed user experience. Point exchange rates arbitrarily set by companies often make exchanging your points from A program to points for B/C programs not worth the hassle of going through complicated process set by different program providers.
๐ Unless John(๐ฑโโ๏ธ) is a big spender/avid fan of company Aโs products/services, heโs not going to collect enough points to be spent in a meaningful way. And what ends up happening is he(๐โโ๏ธ) doesnโt get a chance to redeem for program offerings before his points expire and he(๐คฆโโ๏ธ) gets emails/msgs to spend more from company A if he had agreed to provide his private data.
๐ John(๐ฑโโ๏ธ) has too many stand-alone loyalty program apps or loyalty program integrated apps installed on his phone that he doesnโt use everyday. They are cluttering the home screen. One night, John(๐โโ๏ธ) decides to do some re-organizing and put away/delete apps he seldom uses. Many of these apps end up in a folder that are hardly opened or get deleted entirely.
๐ John(๐ฑโโ๏ธ) likes products from company A, so he usually shops these products. He has loads of points collected from his previous purchases but has difficulty redeeming his points for a reward because he doesnโt like company Aโs offerings for a loyalty reward. He(๐โโ๏ธ) wishes company A can offer cash back to lessen the damage whenever John buys from them. But it doesnโt look like company Aโs loyalty program will have cash back option any time soon. In fact, this is true for a lot of people like John as 66% of the average US consumers would prefer cash back instead of earning points (Bakktโs Loyalty & Rewards 2022 Outlook Study).
